Questioning Evangelism: Engaging People’s Hearts the Way Jesus Did by Randy Newman

Many Christians think that the only skill needed in evangelism is to declare the gospel in a clear concise way to the lost.

Randy Newman says there are a least three skills needed in evangelism. (1) the clear declaration of the gospel, (2) the ability to defend the gospel for those who question and criticize it and (3) the skill of dialoguing the gospel which is a combination of skills (1) and (2).

Newman describes this third skill as “giving and taking – asking questions and bouncing ideas back and forth…” He goes on to say that “We need all three skills if we’re to be Christ’s ambassadors in the twenty-first century.” Cultivating this third skill will enable us to engages people’s hearts the way Jesus did.

Unbroken: A World War 11 Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

I loved the movie but the book was so much more detailed and thrilling.

The true life story of Louis Zamperini. The American Olympiad who shook the hand of Adolf Hitler during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He served as a bombardier in the Pacific in the 2nd World War. Zamperini’s plane crashed in the ocean during a rescue mission. He drifted in the ocean for 47 days surrounded by sharks and eventually was captured by the Japanese. He suffered beating, starvation, humiliation and torture as a prisoner of war. He struggled to overcome the effects of his prisoner of war experiences. He found peace at the Los Angeles Billy Graham Crusade. “In a single, silent moment, his rage, his fear, his humiliation and helplessness, had fallen away. That morning, he believed, he was a new creation.”

The Church Why Bother? The nature, purpose and functions of the local church by Jeffrey D. Johnson

Many question the relevance of the Church today. Johnson talks about the nature, purpose and function of the local Church. He addresses questions like why the Church is here and why the Church struggles to be culturally acceptable? He also looks at other issues like worship, membership, mission, Church discipline and authority.

An informative and refreshing look at the local Church.

The Mortification of Sin by John Owen

John Owen was a puritan who lived in the 1600’s. He was a church leader, theologian and the academic administrator at the University of Oxford.

The Mortification of Sin is a series of lectures on Romans 8 about the believer’s battle against sin.

It is amazing how relevant this book is even though it was written over 300 years ago.

The TRUTH about LIES: The unlikely role of temptation in who you will become by Tim Chaddick

A fresh look at sin, temptation and the grace of God. Chaddick says “the greatest temptations lure us by replacing truth with lies” and “the lies of sin blind us to the beauty of Christ.”

Learning to say no to temptation is a process that the Christian will face through out his life time in this world. It is important that we are completely educated and schooled is Biblical grace. God’s grace has delivered us from the penalty and power of sin.

It is also important to understand that God will use temptation to make us into the Christian God wants us to be.

God’s Crime Scene: A Cold-Case Detective Examines the Evidence for a Divinely Created Universe by J. Warner Wallace

J. Warner Wallace a cold-case detective looks at 8 pieces of evidence found in the universe indicating divine origin.

When a detective investigates a possible crime scene he must first determine if it is a crime scene. Has a homicide been committed based on the evidence found at the scene that indicates an outside perpetrator?

Wallace applies these same investigative techniques to the universe. Did the universe get here through a natural process (naturalism)? Does the evidence support this view? Or did this universe come into existence through the intervention of a supernatural being outside the universe?

The subtitle reads A Psychologist Probes the Mystery of Why Some Lives Really Work and Others Don’t.

In a generation of fatherlessness, we all need models of manhood. This inspiring book provides a short biographical sketch of 7 men.

The book looks at the lives of men like William Wilberforce the man who ended slavery in Britain, Dietrich Bonhoeffer the man who died opposing Hitler and Nazism in World War 2 Germany, Eric Liddell the man who won the men’s 400 metre in the 1924 summer Olympics in Paris, Jackie Robinson the first black baseball player in the major leagues and others.

True for You But Not for Me: Overcoming Objections to Christian Faith by Paul Copan

Many people today find it hard to believe that something can be universally true for all people. The belief in moral absolutes true for all people at all times.

A 2002 survey found that 83% of American teenagers said moral truth depends on circumstance and only 6% said objective moral values exist.

Copan attempts to equip the Christian to respond to the cultural relativism we face today. This book is especially good for high school, college, and university students, parents and church leaders.

Hooked on the Word: Changing Your Life Through Bible Meditation by Ron Smith

This book was a great encouragement to me. It emphasizes taking a small portion of scripture and meditating on it for 15 to 20 minutes a day.

In a world that is so preoccupied with accomplishment, success, business and activity Bible meditation seems like a waste of time. Those in church history who have had the greatest impact on the Church like Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Whitefield, and Moody are also among those who have been keenly devoted to God’s Word.

As the subtitle says changing your life through Bible meditation.
